How Often Should I Clean My Pool?
By Grant Littleton

Ensuring your pool is clean is an essential maintenance and responsibility that comes along with pool ownership. You should be making the effort to spot clean your pool whenever you see anything that looks dirty or does not seem to be functioning properly. In addition, you should make sure that you are cleaning the skimmers, vacuuming the pool, cleaning the tiles, and cleaning the pumps.

Skimmers should be cleaned every day if possible. Depending on how close your pool is to trees, you might be able to get away with cleaning the skimmers only a couple times a week. However, you will notice pretty quickly that if you do not clean the skimmers you will start having to backwash your pool more often. In addition, you will find that your skimmers and the pipes that lead to the pump room can easily get clogged with hair, leaves, and other substances so that your filtration system stops working.

Vacuuming should be done once a week. Some people recommended twice a week, but that ends up being an excessive amount of work. If your pool is close to a lake or trees then you may very well need to increase this number. Vacuuming will help remove leaves and other debris that start working away at your pH levels.

Cleaning the tiles should be performed every week. However, this is another task that takes an excessive amount of work so if you only clean your tiles every couple of weeks, no one is going to blame you.

A thorough cleaning of the pumps should be done twice per season. This includes actually opening up the pumps themselves to clean them. Backwashing can be done based on the pressure you see on the pumps. When it starts getting really high such as the 40s, then you are going to need to backwash as soon as possible.

Keeping your pool clean is essential to preventing algae, keeping consistent filtration, and keeping the appearance of your pool at its best. These are just guidelines so if you think your pool needs to be cleaned more often, then by all means go ahead and clean it. The cleaner, the better when it comes to pools.

Keeping your pool cover is extremely important as well. See pool cover pumps for more information on keeping your pool cover in good shape.
